Wells is limited to two hundred & eighty-one copies, and is presented in three states: Lettered, Numbered and Roman Numeral. The edition measures 6” x 9” and includes six ink illustrations by Florian Bertmer, as well as an exclusive introduction by Simon Wells, great-grandson of H.G. Wells, and director of the 2002 film adaptation. The edition includes “The Chronic Argonauts,” an 1888 short story by H.G. Wells which the author refers to as, “the original draft of what became The Time Machine .” Also included is the long-lost eleventh chapter, “The Grey Man,” published during the novel’s serialization in the January to May issues of The New Review, excised from the first book edition published later that year. Illustrations and text are printed letterpress on a hand-fed Vandercook Cylinder Press, and the editions are signed by Simon Wells and Florian Bertmer. The Numbered edition is a quarter cloth binding with custom designed paper boards, which are printed letterpress. The spine is covered in a vibrant two-toned cloth and endsheets are Hahnemühle Bugra. The edition is housed in a paper covered slipcase and is limited to 250 copies. In addition to the new introduction by Simon Wells, the edition includes the complete deleted text from the eleventh chapter later published under the title The Grey Man , as well as the prequel to The Time Machine , The Chronic Argonauts . Also included are fourteen black & white section drawings charting the movement of Swan’s journey in the story. The half title, title, contents and chapter pages are printed with an additional spot color. Interior design & typography is by award-winning designer Jason Dewinetz. The text type is Albertan, designed by Jim Rimmer. Originally cut and cast as a new metal type by Rimmer himself, Albertan was later developed and expanded into a multi-weight OpenType digital font (Canada Type). The editions are printed by offset lithography on Cougar Natural and Mohawk Via Laid papers and all states are signed by the author & artist. The Lettered edition is limited to 26 copies and is a full goatskin binding with a tight joint and a blocked cover. The leather is from the Alran Tannery in France and is produced in a labor intensive 23-step process which takes 4 weeks to finish. It has a unique natural and rustic grain. Founded in 1903 in the South of Tarn and set in the beautiful surroundings of the “Montagne Noire”, the tannery has developed a vast expertise in the tanning of goat skins. Head & tail bands are leather and endsheets are handmade Amate Bark paper, made in Mexico in the ancient tradition of the Otomi Indians. The paper is created from the bark of the amate wild fig tree, the nettle tree and the mulberry. The edition is printed on Mohawk Via Laid and is published in two volumes with a tipped in fold-out of the Classic edition dust jacket art. It is housed in a clamshell enclosure covered in Dubletta cloth with velour lined floors and is signed by Robert McCammon & Ed Binkley.
