The Colour Out of Space numbered edition

The Suntup edition of The Colour Out of Space by H.P. Lovecraft is presented in three states. The edition measures 6” x 9.85” and features seven wood engravings by Sally Hands, which are printed from the block in all three states, and an introduction by S.T. Joshi. The text pages are set in ITC Golden Cockerel, and are printed letterpress by Pat Randle & Ellen Bills at Nomad Letterpress on a Heidelberg Cylinder in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. Interior design and typography by award-winning designer Misha Beletsky.

The Numbered edition of two hundred fifty copies is a quarter leather binding with hand marbled paper by Renato Crepaldi, created for this edition. The marbled “tiger eye” pattern is intended to align with the story’s central presence, and to evoke the alien force itself—something pervasive, watchful, and beyond clear comprehension.

The spine leather is sourced from J Hewit & Sons; the historic leather merchant which was founded in 1823 and continues to manufacture the finest quality leathers for bookbinding. Head and tail bands are handmade with leather and endsheets are Hahnemühle Bugra.

The edition is printed letterpress on mouldmade Liber Charta, developed by John Purcell Paper as a high-quality alternative to the now-discontinued Zerkall paper. It offers a smooth finish suitable for letterpress printing and wood engravings. Each volume is housed in a clamshell enclosure with cloth-covered boards and velour-lined trays. The edition is signed by S.T. Joshi and Sally Hands.
