Design notes from Lyra's Press website

The design of this special, limited edition of ‘Stardust’ has been heavily influenced by the books of the ‘Golden Age of Illustration’ from the early part of the 20th century. These were the days of book illustration giants such as Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac who were illustrating the Brothers Grimm, Aesops Fables and other fairytale classics.

The page layout is very similar to those ‘Golden Age’ books, with extra-large margins and a compact text block.

There are nine wonderful, full colour illustrations by Charles in this illustrated edition of ‘Stardust’ plus the title page. Three of these illustrations are new, the other six are older but did not appear in the original DC edition. Charles has also written a new foreword for this edition.

Standard edition - Limited to 500 copies and only signed by Charles Vess. This edition is split into two states. 250 copies will be quarter bound in dark blue cloth, the other 250 copies will be quarter bound in mustard cloth.

The front and back boards are made of handmarbled paper Freya Scott of Paperwilds (UK) especially commissioned for this edition.

The top edge is hand coloured using dark blue ink and spattered with gold. Internally, the text is printed on 120gsm Munken paper. This edition does not have tipped on plates, instead the illustrations are printed directly to the pages. These pages are then individually inserted into the book.

The Standard edition comes in a dark blue, buckram covered slipcase which has the Charles Vess design stamped to the front in gold.
